Bangkok Nightlife

Much of Bangkok’s nightlife is located in the two red light districts of Bangkok – Patpong (between Silom and Surawong Roads) and Soi Cowboy (Sukhumvit Road), named after the first bar that opened here. Bangkok’s sex industry is as booming as ever. However, in addition to the numerous massage parlours and sex clubs, there are many excellent cocktail bars and restaurants. Most venues are open late into the night, although bars and clubs are supposed to close at 01:00. Sometimes, there is an admission fee but this includes one or two drinks. The dress code is relaxed, although a few of the more upscale nightclubs enforce smarter dress.

Nightlife venues come and go and news of the latest hotspots can be found in the city’s listings magazine, Bangkok Metro.

The Bull’s Head, 33/1 Sukhumvit Road, is popular with the ex-pat residents of Bangkok. It is a British-style pub, with regular quiz and theme nights. Irish pubs are popular and the busy Dubliner Irish Pub on Sukhumvit Road (Washington Square) is no exception. A stylish watering hole is The Barbican on Soi Thaniya, Silom Road, with a large selection of drinks and good food. The attractively named Skunk, Ekamai Soi 10, Soi 63 Sukhumvit Road, draws a crowd and has interesting decor, such as car parts on the walls.

Gambling is illegal in Thailand.

Concept CM2 is a huge disco and bar in the basement of the Novotel Hotel on Siam Square, very popular, in particular on Thursday, its retro night. The amazing light and sound system and ostentatious Art Deco-style of Narcissus, 112 Soi 23 Sukhumvit Road, attracts the smart set who like house, trance and techno. Ministry of Sound, 2 Soi 12 Sukhumvit Road, has guest slots with internationally known DJs. The hangout for trendy locals and ex-pats is Q Bar, 34 Soi 11 Sukhumvit Road, which also imports top international DJs. Both clubs offer music from house to hip hop.

Live music

Top-quality bands frequent La Lunar, Soi 26 Sukhumvit Road, which has a multi-screen video system and impressive lights and lasers. The Bamboo Bar in the upmarket, The Oriental (see Hotels), is an intimate, refined club with an excellent reputation for its guest jazz bands.
